Recently, Colorado’s maternal mental health grade has dropped from a B- to a C, raising questions about the care provided to mothers, particularly in rural areas. This change highlights a critical need for supportive systems tailored for Black mothers who often shoulder unique challenges.
The report reveals that about 40% of Colorado counties are maternity care deserts, meaning they lack the necessary hospitals or OB providers to support mothers effectively. For many women, especially those from marginalized communities, this gap in care can lead to untreated postpartum mental health conditions.
As a community, we are called to acknowledge these barriers and advocate for better resources and support systems for new mothers. The silence surrounding maternal mental health does not protect us; only collective action and truth-telling can lead to healing.
